Originally, I was planning to introduce Arc to everyone, and many people were looking forward to it. After all, the two founders have a great background. Their idea is that the commonly used software like Notion and Slack are essentially packaged web pages as client applications. Therefore, this browser they developed aims to serve as an operating system for the internet, blurring the boundaries between software and websites. It claims to be able to fulfill all your needs on this browser. However, after trying it out, many people have been discouraged by its lack of smoothness and the fact that it cannot be used on Mac computers or iOS devices. We will discuss any improvements in the future.
But today, I discovered this browser called Sidekick, which focuses on improving productivity, and I fell in love with it at first use.
Supported Platforms#
First of all, it supports Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it definitely uses the Chromium engine. You can easily import passwords, browsing history, and plugins from other browsers. Let's take a look at some of its features.
Sidebar#
When you first open it, you will see a beautiful new tab page where you can set frequently visited websites. These websites will also be displayed on the left sidebar, making it convenient to open them from any page.
For example, if you upload software to major cloud storage platforms like Wudian, and you need to paste all the sharing links onto Notion, this feature will be very useful. You no longer need to search for each link in the tab bar. If there are keyboard shortcuts available for certain operations, Sidekick will prompt you, making it easier to remember.
Moreover, the sidebar is not just an icon, it can also be seen as a permanent tab or an app. It will display a badge and play a notification sound when there are new messages. If you have granted desktop notification authorization, you will receive notifications even without opening the browser. You can directly search the content inside the sidebar by right-clicking and selecting the magnifying glass. It truly blurs the boundaries between websites and software. Of course, if you feel that they may disturb your work, there is also an interference blocking and focus mode in the lower left corner. It's hard not to improve work efficiency!
Account Switching#
In addition, for some websites or software that we frequently use, we may have multiple accounts registered to store different content. With Sidekick, you can right-click on the icons of these commonly used websites and easily switch between multiple accounts.
Split Screen#
If you need to use two websites at the same time, for example, watching a movie while writing an article, or reading a report while creating a spreadsheet, we usually prepare two browsers or two separate tabs, or use some split screen software to achieve a side-by-side display effect.
This browser has a built-in split screen function, which can be quickly activated by using a keyboard shortcut. You can also freely drag and resize the screens, just like on an iPad.
Chat#
The chat function in the lower left corner is also very useful. Taking Wuzhi as an example again, every time a video is produced, you have to open a specific video website and upload it one by one. If your work requires you to open multiple fixed websites at once, you can simply open the corresponding websites in the chat function and pin them to the corresponding session. In the future, whenever you need them, just hover over the icon in the lower left corner and select the corresponding session to open all the websites at once. In the past, Wuzhi had to open a website in a new tab, go back, open another one, and repeat this process, which was very troublesome.
Settings#
The settings also come with many features that others may or may not have. One common feature is ad blocking, so you don't need to install additional plugins. If you have too many tabs open and the CPU usage is too high, it can remind you and automatically put high CPU usage but inactive websites to sleep. If a tab is not visited for a long time, it can also be set to sleep at a scheduled time to free up memory. For different web pages under the same domain, it will merge processes, so you don't have to worry about the browser crashing.
Others#
There are still many features that I haven't explored yet. The magnifying glass in the upper right corner is an aggregated search function. You can search any data within the browser with just one click. It is somewhat similar to the plugin Omni that we introduced before.
There is also a privacy feature that friends who frequently use ChatGPT will definitely like.
